Anna Batts Wins 2012 “MC Spirit!” Scholarship

The Wilson Daily Times (Wilson, NC)

Anna Batts, a Hunt High School senior, was awarded the third annual MC
Spirit Scholarship for $1,000. When the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation
was created in 2008 after Satterly’s death from leukemia at age 27, its
first goal was to establish the Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Playroom in
the new UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill. Since
then the Foundation has created and sustained an art therapy program for
the patients as well as making it possible to launch some wonderful new
support programs for siblings and families of cancer patients at the
clinic. The Foundation has also awarded a research grant to a young
scientist who is working on a cure for AML leukemia. Another initial goal
was to establish the MC Spirit Scholarship in recognition of Satterly’s
accomplishments in journalism and advertising, her love for the arts, her
zest for life and her concern for others.

Anna will be studying gerontology at Barton College this fall as well as
art. She plans to pursue a degree in occupational therapy in graduate
school. In her senior project at Hunt, she used art therapy with special
needs children. In her application, Anna stated that she “wants to live a
life full of art and service to others.” “Anna was truly a perfect fit for
the MC Spirit Scholarship,” said Mary Claire’s mother, Joan Satterly. Anna
is the daughter of Reggie and Lisa Batts of Wilson.

Holiday Arts and Crafts Sale Raises $1,066.00 for the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation

Caroline (9) and Jackson Stone (10), daughter and son of Dr. Russell and Lisa Stone of Wilson, NC held an Arts and Craft Holiday Sale at their home on December 21, 2010. They made Christmas ornaments and decorations and many delicious baked goods. They donated $1,066.00 to the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation. After talking with Dr. Gold, head of Pediatric Oncology, it was decided to donate this money directly to the Art Therapy Program which the Foundation established with a $25,000.00 grant this fall in the Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Playroom.

Last year, Caroline had her first sale and donated toys directly to the Playroom. The MCSpirit and the Christmas spirit were so evident in these wonderful children.

From Dr. Ho:

“It’s nice to see the MCSF name in print in this type of forum. On the attached PDF copy of the article, first page, left-hand column, third paragraph, grant funding is acknowledged. I hope this is another way to raise awareness about the Foundation, and through it, MC’s story, among the AML community which reads this research.”

Katy Purinai of Greenfield School Receives First “MCSpirit!” Scholarship

In recognition of Mary Claire’s accomplishments and love for the arts, The Mary Claire Satterly Foundation has established a $1,000.00 scholarship for a graduating senior from any Wilson County High School who will be attending a four-year accredited college or university. Like Mary Claire, the recipient of the “MCSpirit!” Scholarship should demonstrate a zest for life, a concern for others, and plan to major in liberal arts, communications, or advertising. The Foundation is proud to announce that the first recipient of the “MCSpirit” Scholarship in 2010 was Katy Purinai. Katie graduated from Greenfield school and is now attending North Carolina State’s School of Design.

More about The “MCSpirit! Scholarship

As the Foundation remains committed to numerous goals, both accomplished (Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Playroom) and current (AML research grant / Digital Art Therapy). This scholarship is intended to continue to keep MC’s spirit alive through her passion for the arts. Mary Claire graduated from Hunt High School and the School of Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was able to spend a semester in Florence, Italy in an UNC-Chapel Hill program where she also received a minor in Art History. After graduation, she used her degree in Journalism to procure a wonderful advertising job in New York City with Deutsch Advertising and later in San Francisco with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. At both agencies, she received numerous awards for her work while never losing sight of volunteering in her local community. Through the “MCSpirit!” scholarship we hope to have similar qualities and strong work ethic MC possessed carried on through future high school graduates.

Before the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation was formed, Carolina Helmick Boersma, Janie Smith and Graham Harrelson spread “MC Spirit” through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. However, the real running began when friends started to run and raise money directly for the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation. In November 2008, Whitney Wright Ehrlich ran 26.2 miles in the NYC Marathon and raised funds for the foundation.

Kate and Ben Keefer

On April 5th, 2008 in Richmond, Virginia, Kate Keefer and her husband, Ben, ran in the Ukrop’s Monument Ave 10k as an opportunity to get in shape, test their athletic abilities, and raise money for the VCU Cancer Center. It was a rainy day, and folks backed out of the race, but their motivation for the day was them both saying “there are cancer patients that would give anything to run in the rain…we’re running!” What they didn’t realize was their great friend Stephen Satterly’s sister, Mary Claire, was fighting for her life that very same day. One year later, on March 28th 2009, they again successfully completed the Ukrop’s Monument Ave 10k, but this time they raised over $1,000 for the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation.

On May 30, 2009, Stephen Satterly’s friends, Lisa and Dan Parker, ran the Dam to Dam 5k in Des Moines, Iowa in honor of Mary Claire. Though they never got a chance to meet Mary Claire personally, she was an inspiration to both of them as they ran. This is proof that MC’s spirit continues to touch people today.

On August 1, 2009, Amanda Hager and Andi Christenson swam, biked and ran their way to the finish line in the WIN for KC Triathlon in Kansas City, Missouri. Neither Amanda nor Andi had ever participated in a triathlon, but they decided to step out of their comfort zone and compete in an effort to create awareness about the MCS Foundation.

May Burns, Janie Smith and Graham Harrelson ran the NYC Half Marathon on August 16, 2009 in honor of their good friend, Mary Claire. The MCS Foundation is something that is near and dear to their hearts and runningfor this cause was a no-brainer.

Though all of these people live in different parts of the country and some are not true runners, the common thread for all is the dedication of spreading MCSpirit. They have dedicated their race, training and fundraising to the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation and its mission.

On Sunday, August 16th, Janie Smith, Graham Harrelson, and May Burns will run the 2009 NYC Half Marathon (13.1 miles!!!) in support of the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation. They are running this race again this year to honor their dear friend, Mary Claire “MC” Satterly, who died of complications from leukemia on April 7, 2008.

Since last year’s race, they have several highlights to share:

The Mary Claire Satterly Foundation was formed and “officially” introduced to friends and family at a fundraising event in San Francisco.

The Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Oncology Playroom was established at the new Cancer Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A fundraising goal of $300,000 was set and the playroom is scheduled to open this fall.

The inaugural Fall Gala and Silent Auction was held at the Museum of the City of New York November 15, 2008. Over $90,000 was raised for the Foundation!

The Second Annual “I Heart MC” Fall Gala and Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, NC

The girls have dedicated their race, training and fundraising to MC’s Foundation and its mission. When MC was still in strong spirits after receiving the first of three painful bone marrow biopsy she said, “As soon as I get home, I’m going to comfort any child going through this!” MC’s wishes were made real in the creation of the Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Oncology Playroom; it’s a place where sick children can just be children, something so dear to MC!

“MC Spirit” shines bright inside of them and continues to inspire them daily. This group of amazing friends hopes you will continue to share this MC Spirit they truly love and miss by supporting them in this year’s NYC Half Marathon. The MCSF is only $84,000 shy of its $300,000 goal!

Janie, Graham, and May thank you in advance for your support, and appreciate your generosity particularly during these challenging economic times. Together, we can make a difference!

“Spirited Living, Inspired Giving”

THE MARY CLAIRE SATTERLY FOUNDATION THANKS JANIE, GRAHAM, MAY, AND ALL THEIR SPONSORS FOR HELPING SPREAD MCSPIRIT!!!
GOOD LUCK!!

On August 1st, the two will step out of their comfort zone and compete in the WIN for KC Triathlon in Kansas City, Missouri. The main reason they are participating in this is event is to create awareness about the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation and to spread “MCSpirit.”

Good Friends and Co-Workers at Cisco Systems, Inc. Amanda and Andi will Swim, Bike, and Run to the Finish Line! If any other ladies want to participate, let them know – there’s still time for training! They already have a couple of girls signed up with them and can’t wait to meet up in Kansas City.

(Sorry guys, this is a Ladies Only event.)

Their Story and how they intend to spread “MCSpirit!”

For those of you who have spent anytime with us, I am sure it comes as a little bit of a surprise to you that we are running a 5K!! We are not runners! However, due to our competetive nature, when the idea was posed to us, neither one of us wanted to be the one that declined. So….We have signed up to run the 5k portion of the Dam to Dam race in Des Moines.

Running a race for enjoyment (who does that???), is not appealing to Dan and I, so we have decided to run this race in honor of our good friend Stephen Satterly’s sister, Mary Claire Satterly. As you may or may not know, a little over a year ago, she was diagnosed with an aggressive type of leukemia, and lost her courageous battle only 4 days later. Mary Claire was 27 years old. Dan & I are honored to be running this 5k for Stephen’s sister, Mary Claire Satterly. She is an inspiration to both of us, even with out having met her personally!

Dan I would like to ask for your sponsorship for the foundation that her Friends & Family have created for her, Mary Claire Satterly Foundation. (MCSF) The funds raised will be used to build a children’s playroom at the new University of Chapel Hill Cancer Hospital. This will be the first of many projects sponsored by MCSF.

Thank you in advance for your time and donations!

Dan & Lisa Parker

Last year Kate and her Husband Ben ran in this 10K as an opportunity to get in shape, test their athletic abilities, and raise money for the VCU Cancer Center. It was a rainy day, and many folks backed out of the race, but their motivation for the day was them both saying ”there are cancer patients that would give anything to run in the rain…we’re running!” What they didn’t realize was their great friend Stephen Satterly’s sister, Mary Claire, was fighting for her life that very day. MC was diagnoised with an agressive type of leukemia and lost her courageous battle only 4 days later, 2 days after our race. Mary Claire was 27 years old.

This year Kate would like to ask for your sponsorship and support towards the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation created by MC’s family and close friends. 100% of the proceeds donated and raised will be used to build the Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Playroom at the new University of Chapel Hill Cancer Hospital, the first of many MCSF projects. Please inquire with your employer about company matching opportunities as this is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

We encourage you in supporting Kate and the MCSF!
