In just 27 years, Mary Claire Satterly touched the lives of many. Lovingly known as “MC,” her zest for life, her love of others, and her innate goodness was contagious among all who knew her, and even those who did not. Her caring nature coupled with the highest of spirits earned itself a nickname, “MC Spirit.”
In April of 2008, during a trip to her family home in Wilson, North Carolina to celebrate her Godchild’s baptism, MC was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). Just four days after her diagnosis, cancer ended her life…but not her shining light. The MARY CLAIRE SATTERLY FOUNDATION, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, was established by family and friends in honor of this Most Celebrated Spirit. The Foundation provides support for charitable organizations and individuals, with a focus on finding a cure for leukemia and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. The Foundation also promotes MC’s passion for the arts and scholarship in the field of journalism and advertising and, most importantly, shares Mary Claire’s story and compassion for others. The Foundation’s first of many goals is establish the Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Oncology Playroom in the new Cancer Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C. In this playroom, sick children can just be children, something so dear to Mary Claire.
As the Foundation continues to grow and support these special causes, we invite you to help us build this website, propose future Foundation goals, plan “fun”draisers, and above all, spread “MCSpirit!”
